About this campaign
My name is Roba Khaled. I am a mother of two, and like every mother, all I want is to keep my children safe. But in Gaza, that has become nearly impossible. We are not here for attention. We speak because we are desperate to survive. Before the war, I was a caregiver and homemaker who could at least promise my children a warm bed and a plate of food. Today, I wake up unsure whether I can feed them at all.
Food and water are nearly gone. A single bag of flour, if it can be found, costs more than $100. Roba describes searching through damaged markets and broken roads for anything she can give her children. Sometimes the family goes to sleep hungry. Sometimes there is no clean water, and whatever can be found must be boiled to reduce the risk of illness.
The family lives in a tent now, with thin plastic offering little protection from wind, cold and fear. Roba’s youngest child is four years old and does not understand why they cannot go home. Her eldest is eight and asks why there are planes in the sky and what happened to his school. Roba says the fear in their eyes is the hardest thing to bear.
Before the war, Roba dreamed of giving her children school, safety and a future. Now she prays that they survive each night. Her message is simple: please do not look away. The family is still fighting to be seen, helped and kept alive.
I used to dream of giving my children a better life—school, safety and a future. Now I just pray they survive the night. We are not statistics. We are families, mothers and children, still fighting to stay alive.
